Cardiopulmonary resuscitation should begin immediately when it is detected that the dog has no pulse or breathing.

The other method of checking the heartbeat is based on directly sensing the pulse in the legs. However, it is more complex and is not advisable for people with insufficient experience.

The second is to identify if the dog expels air through the mouth: the face must be brought closer to that of an animal to feel its breath.

In case the responses are negative in both verifications, that is, if the animal has no beats or breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be started immediately.

The process to apply cardiac massage:

  • The first step is to place the dog lying on its right side (lateral decubitus), with the left side up. This position allows applying the massage just at the level of the heart.
  • Before starting to give a dog a cardiac massage, it is essential to ensure that their airways are not obstructed. To do this, the mouth of the dog is examined to certify that there are no foreign objects or any natural narrowing.
  • After checking the absence of obstructions, you can start performing CPR. First, the dog’s head should be extended backward until it is aligned with the neckline, allowing air to enter the inside of the body easily.
  • Then, it is time to start performing artificial breaths through strong and short movements. The lungs are filled as much as possible with air and then expelled continuously through the muzzle of the dog, with enough force to reach its lungs.
  • Intercalated with the breaths, pectoral compressions are performed, with the strong, firm, and rhythmic movements. For this, only the palms of the hands are used: it crosses one over the other, while one is located just behind the articulation of its front data.
  • Ideally, keep your elbows well stretched and do not bend them while applying cardiac massage to a dog.
  • In small dogs and cats, it is recommended to insert three breaths with ten compressions. And in medium and large dogs, at least five breaths with 15 compressions are inserted.

Last but not least, it should be noted that cardiac massage is an emergency act. After getting the dog to recover his pulse and breathing, it is essential to take him to the veterinarian to verify his state of health and prevent the incident from happening again.
